Washington Wild Welcomes Skagit Valley Malting to the Brewshed Alliance

Posted on Dec 6, 2019 in Brewshed, Conservation News, Skagit Headwaters

Washington Wild is thrilled to welcome Skagit Valley Malting to the Brewshed Alliance as the latest member. As a hyper-local malting company located in Burlington, SVM is on a mission to build innovative malt supply chains in support of family farms, rural communities, and landscape-scale conservation.

SVM strives for comprehensive sustainability and for them, this starts with water. Their current malting process uses approximately ⅓ of the water than that of traditional malting processes. They are also working with partner farmers to secure the salmon-safe certification which encompasses water quality protection, water use management, and erosion and sediment control. Colin Griffith, SVM’s Sustainability Specialist and a Washington Wild Brewshed Ambassador, is working on several projects that upcycle the by-product of the malting process in ways that promote their sustainable ideals. SVM believes that transparency in the malting process helps consumers travel “upstream” from their favorite craft beers!

As a craft maltster, Skagit Valley Malting already works with several of our current Brewshed Alliance partners including Pike Brewing Co., Fremont Brewing, Aslan Brewing Co., Stones Throw Brewery, Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery and more. They are excited to partner with Washington Wild on charity beer collaborations, events, and conservation initiatives.

Washington Wild has advocated for the protection of the Skagit River headwaters, celebrating a recent victory on halted logging plans in the pristine Canadian headwaters. Washington Wild continues to oppose a proposed mining permit in the headwaters and has helped build a coalition of more than 140 conservation, recreation and wildlife groups as well as elected officials, outdoor industry leaders, local businesses and Tribes and First Nations from both Canada and the United States. The Skagit is home to Puget Sound’s healthiest remaining runs of wild salmon and steelhead and provides drinking water, a thriving agricultural industry, and ultimately delicious craft malt.

As a company who is at the forefront of sustainability, is in tune with the significance of their watershed, and is just as passionate about craft beer as we are- we are proud to welcome Skagit Valley Malting to the Brewshed Alliance!
