Here’s why: A billionaire hedge-fund manager is single-handedly trying to reshape Washington State’s laws by putting up $6 million of his own money to get I-2117 and other dangerous initiatives on the ballot this November.
Enacted in 2021, Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA) is a comprehensive piece of legislation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and addressing the climate crisis. By placing equity at the forefront, combining regulatory mechanisms with investments in clean technology, and advancing natural climate solutions, the CCA aims to position Washington as a leader in climate action and environmental stewardship. Repealing the CCA would restrict essential forest management practices and land-use strategies, like the Trust Land Transfer program. Initiative 2117 prioritizes short-term economic interests over long-term ecological health and investing in natural climate solutions like ensuring we protect as many acres of intact forestlands as possible.
If voters approve I-2117, the burden of responsibility for covering the costs of pollution will shift from a small group of polluters to communities, workers, and families. It would strip away investments in community priorities across the state—from programs that lower costs for Washingtonians to transportation and transit services to wildfire prevention programs.
