The Washington State Legislature is in the final stages of negotiating the 2026 capital budget, and a critical decision is looming regarding the Trust Land Transfer (TLT) program. This program is essential to the conservation of our state’s public lands, but there is currently a significant funding gap between the House and Senate proposals

The Funding Discrepancy:

  • The House has proposed $16.9 million to fund 6 conservation projects.
  • The Senate has proposed $4.8 million for only 1 project.

Why the TLT Program Matters

  • Conservation: Safeguarding our natural heritage and fish and wildlife habitat.
  • Education & Community: Benefiting K-12 schools, universities, and local public services
  • Economic Stability: Maintaining working forests and supporting rural communities.

Since its inception in 1989, the program has preserved more than 128,000 acres of state trust land for recreation, education, and community use. To continue this track record of success, it is vital that the Senate meets the $16.9 million funding mark during final negotiations.
