Henry M. Jackson Wilderness

Posted on Jun 4, 2024 in Washington's Wilderness Areas

ABOUT
Named in honor of Washington Senator Henry Jackson, this Wilderness straddles more than 30 miles of crest line, with deep glacial valleys spreading out east and west. Often nicknamed the “American Alps” the northwest section of this area lives up to that reputation with glacial basins surrounded by sharp spires and snowcapped peaks.

HOW IT WAS PROTECTED
The Henry M. Jackson Wilderness was protected in 1984 by the Washington State Wilderness Act. Washington Wild was founded in 1979 with the goal of building a local grassroots movement to protect Wilderness areas throughout Washington. After five years of advocacy and organizing, the Washington State Wilderness Act of 1984 marked the organization’s first major victory.
