June 9       Seattle’s Wild Backyard: The Middle Fork Valley

55 hikes cover.jpgRick McGuire has traveled extensively throughout the Middle Fork Valley and has been one of the foremost activists on the campaign to protect much of this valley through wilderness and wild and scenic river designations. Rick will use slides and anecdotes to chronicle the history of conservation in the beloved forested valley northeast of North Bend which has culminated in legislation now moving through the U.S. Congress. August 11     Building Winning Partnerships Around

evergreen mountain bike.jpgJon Kennedy will speak about how Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance has worked together with WWC and other wilderness organizations to find common ground around new wilderness and wild and scenic river designations. On the Alpine Lakes Wilderness additions legislation moving through Congress, an agreement was reached which resulted in mountain bikers endorsing the proposal even though, as a mechanized use, they are prohibited within wilderness areas. October 13     Protecting Washington’s Free-flowing Wild Rivers

Doug North, WWC Board Member and Founder of Washington Rivers Council

Doug will speak about the renaissance of efforts to designate wild and scenic rivers in Washington State. Doug founded the Washington Rivers Council, which he created to focus on a statewide wild and scenic river bill in the 1980’s. Those efforts culminated in a statewide proposal in 1992 which was never became law. In 1990, Doug wrote the 24-page appendix to Tim McNulty’s book, Washington’s Wild Rivers: The Unfinished Work, detailing the nuts and bolts of state and federal river protection programs and outlining a detailed proposal for future river designations.
